Frequently asked questions.

What is CART Captioning?

CART is an acronym for Computer Accessible Real-time Translation. A trained stenographer provides CART Captioning also known as realtime captioning converting the spoken word to text.

A trained stenographer writes the exact words spoken phonetically using a shorthand machine with a keyboard feeding the words into a database within a specialized program that then generates the text. The text is then sent via the internet through a platform for recipients to view on a screen in a conference room, a screen in a large venue like a stadium, a laptop or their mobile device. If the recipient has to leave the conference room or venue temporarily they can switch to watching the realtime captions on their mobile device without missing any of the presentation!

Where is CART Captioning used?

CART Captioning is useful for making communication accessible in realtime to anyone who may have a hearing loss, an auditory processing disorder, English as a second language are but a few examples. CART Captioning can be used to provide accessibility in professional settings where the professional requires captions such as medical meetings for a doctor, legal proceedings for a lawyer, meetings for a psychologist who is counselling their clients. Realtime captioning improves accessibility for individuals and audiences in a variety of environments such as church services, conventions, corporate meetings, educational classes, seminars, sporting events, teleconference calls, television broadcasts, webcasts, workshops, webcasts.

Individuals who have a hearing loss; have learning disabilities; have language barriers and those with limited mobility which restricts their ability to take notes are just some who benefit from realtime CART captioning.
